In September 2021 Shanly Foundation were delighted to support the Sylva Foundation’s ‘Waste Not Want Not’ project. The project was to purchase and install a briquetter to convert waste sawdust from the Sylva Wood Centre into material which could then be used to heat the premises, whilst also avoiding sending waste to landfill. The Sylva Wood Centre, based in south Oxfordshire encourages the use of home-grown wood by supporting skills, enterprise and innovation. They achieve this through providing a business hub for small businesses who work in wood, providing facilities for wood associated start-ups and micro-businesses; as well as managing the forest, orchard and wildflower meadow that surrounds their buildings. Their new briquetter and associated facilities were installed and operational in May 2022 and the Sylva Foundation are quietly confident that they will be able to heat their buildings self-sufficiently this winter, whilst also saving on the costs of disposing of materials in landfill.
